On February 23, 2021 Chicago’s Mayor Lightfoot signed the Welcoming City Ordinance. This ordinance amends existing city ordinance that took the legal protections a step further and instituted policies to protect the due process rights of Chicago’s immigrants. Chicago Welcoming City Ordinance forbids police from arresting a person based solely on immigration status or provide support to federal immigration enforcement operations. It also prevents city agencies from requesting, maintaining or sharing immigration status.
